Passion Drives Progress
This is the first time that I have encountered difficulty in my attempt to compose my monthly column. All month I've tried writing stories that just haven't been writing themselves. Today I'm doing all that I can to muster up the inspiration to write about passion but I am tired, a little frustrated and a glass of wine has already entered my bloodstream.
I am tired because I have been growing my business in a tough market, moving my office and renovating a historic building we bought in downtown.I've been doing all this while trying to keep the composure that accompanies being a phenomenal Urban Homemaker.It is exhilaratingly exhausting and in the end I wouldn't do anything else.In fact, in the middle of this hustle bustle, I've become an armchair philosopher.Here's my latest profound realization: passion drives progress.
By now you have figured out that I usually write about Downtown Daytona Beach and the progressive things happening here.Okay, I am trying to convince some of you people to move down here, fix up old homes, open a business, etcetera.Passion is what inspired me to open up my business in Downtown Daytona Beach.Passion is what allows me to see the potential in this area and passion provides me with the drive to progress.
Some days I am tired; some days I get discouraged and some days I ride the emotional rollercoaster from super positive to devastatingly negative.However, it is evident that pure passion is what allows me to continue to press on and to break through the times of frustration and the feelings of discouragement.If you are passionate about something like I am passionate about seeing downtown fulfill its destiny, then you will undoubtedly encounter trying times, but in the end you will realize that your driving passion fueled your progression to success.

| If passion drive progress, then that means the passion has left Downtown. I wonder why this happened. Is it because of urban sprawl, urban decay, or does it have to do with traffic patterns (less traffic less potential customers)? What would it take to ignite a passion is the hearts of Daytona residents to bring the Downtown area back to it's former glory? Maybe an achor shop is needed. I remember when Dolby's, Dunn Toys, Woolworths and a very nice resturant was on Beach Street. Back then my family used to come to the area quite frequently. That resturant was THE place to take out-of-town visitor when they came to Daytona. I asked a long-time Daytona resident why they no longer venture Downtown and the answer was very unexpected but completely obvious afterwards. The answer was "Parking." She said it is rather difficult to find a good parking space close to the places she would like to go. So instead of parking farther away and walking she would rather find a similar place elsewhere where parking is ample and the walk to the front door is rather short. I think the Downtown area will improve, it truly is a historic place , a part of Daytona's history that must be kept alive. |

| First, you need Office workers. I would suggest something in either Finance or Software. Both of these bring higher than average salaries and the workers have plenty of free time. After that put in a small Art gallery (we ave some reputable local artist you know) and maybe a little Coffee Shop (not Starbucks). This gives the workers a place to hang out during lunch and after work. We also don't have a "upscale" afterhours place since Martini's moved to South Daytona. I try going to RedTail's somedays after work, but it is more like a dive-bar with a much older (and retired) demographic. We need something to bring the Young Upwardly mobile Professionals into downtown. Think about High-income low expenses (no children and probably no Mortgage either). This will create the cultural center to envied by cities across Florida (including Orlando which has primarily a services/tourism based economy that cannot sustain itself). If you guys really want to plan this whole thing out, we could get this in motion before they ever break ground on that stupid "Daytona Live!" thing they plan to build. We know alot of right people in the area from Venture Capitialists to Developers and even an advocate for Downtown Daytona. It will work. |
